Through our Internship Grant Program, Spencer aims to support tomorrow’s Risk Management and Insurance leaders through experiential learning opportunities.
Spencer provides internship grants of up to $7,500 to Risk Managers to hire interns in the risk management function of their organizations. Employers apply for grants from Spencer, and students then apply directly with the companies for internship opportunities.
Since 1999, Spencer has awarded over $2.9 million to create over 570 risk management internships.
To be eligible, Risk Managers must be based in the United States, Canada, or Bermuda.

Internship Grant awardees (Risk Managers) are typically notified in the first week of December.
Description:
Through the internship program, students learn about the field in a real-world business setting where they can quickly apply what they know, respond to new experiences, and begin to develop contacts in the industry.
THIS GRANT IS GIVEN TO EMPLOYERS ONLY. Students interested in internships with a Spencer grant-funded company or organization should contact the companies directly. A list of companies receiving internship grants is posted on our website and social media channels.
EMPLOYER CRITERIA:
Eligible Employer applicants must meet and agree to the following criteria to receive grant funding:
Applicants must be practicing risk managers.
The internship position must be within the risk management function of the organization and must be centered around meaningful projects or responsibilities in risk management.
Administrative tasks should comprise no more than 25% of the intern’s time.
Internships should be a minimum of 8 weeks in duration.
Grant recipients must confirm the selection of an intern within 90 days of notification of approval or forfeit the grant.
The Spencer Educational Foundation will assist in locating an intern only if you have exhausted the search process without any results.
Once you are selected as a Spencer Internship Grant recipient, a copy of the intern’s transcript (official or unofficial) and resume must be sent to Spencer to receive the grant funding.
The entirety of the Internship grant funds MUST be applied to the intern's experience. Any remaining funds not used towards the intern's salary must be creatively applied towards beneficial professional/learning experiences. Past examples have included attendance at a local conference/event, support of a student to take a course towards a professional designation, etc. You will be asked to supply a final budget at the culmination of the internship, and a partial refund will be requested if the grant was not spent entirely on the internship experience.
If your proposal is selected, grant recipients must agree to submit a final report after the internship has ended. Interns will also be required to submit a final survey at the completion of their internship.

Risk Management Intern Testimonials
“In the summer of 2024, I had the amazing opportunity to be a Spencer Risk Management Intern with Henry Schein, where I built a strong foundation in the insurance industry. I managed the supplier due diligence process, participated in meetings about ongoing claims, and contributed to the coverage renewal process. The experience, enhanced by Spencer webinars and my Spencer-sponsored attendance at the Insurtech Insights Conference, deepened my understanding of risk management and helped me forge valuable connections as I prepare for my professional journey in the RMI industry after graduation.”
— GB Tran, Student, Temple University
“I am beyond thankful to Spencer for funding my risk management internship with Culver Franchising System! This was my first internship experience and it allowed me to learn and grow within the risk and insurance industry. I’m currently a Junior at University of Wisconsin-Madison, and have been able to apply my learnings from that summer to my studies. Through Spencer, I attended insightful webinars where I heard from RMI professionals and engaged with other risk management interns. The Foundation has also continued to support me and my career aspirations by providing many resources and opportunities. I’m very grateful to have experienced my internship through Spencer, and I look forward to my future career in the RMI industry!”
— CJ Leuck, Student, University of Wisconsin-Madison
“During my internship, I gained experience in a variety of areas within Risk Management. I also participated in the weekly Spencer webinars, which were helpful in broadening my understanding of the RMI industry.”
— Brandon Flores, Student, Old Dominion University
